Today I want to share with you step by step how you can attract more dream clients using Instagram alone.
1. Know who you’re talking to
Yes, yes, yes… I know you’ve heard this a million times before. But that’s because it’s pretty important. If you don’t know who you’re talking to, you’re going to be talking to anyone and everyone… which means you’ll attract no-one.
Get Clear on who your Dream Clients are
So get clear on exactly who your dream clients are. Get inside their head by talking to them! You can find out a lot about someone by having a simple conversation.
From time to time I hop on Instagram stories and ask my audience what they want to learn from me. I ask them what their goals are and what are their struggles. Try it.
2. Optimise your Instagram name
Did you know that your name section in your Instagram bio is the most searchable thing on Instagram? People commonly think their name must appear in this section but that’s not true. It’s completely customisable. That means that you can change it to work for you.
Get Found in a search even if people don’t know your name
So let’s make it super simple for people to find you. Change your name into words that highlight what your Instagram profile or business is about. Ta Da! You can now be found in a search even if people don’t know your name!
Pro Tip: By using keywords that your dream clients are searching for your chances of appearing in the top results will be much higher!. Think of it like appearing on page 1 of Google.
In my case, mine says The Soulful Marketing Caoch, and the reason why I have this is because I know that my dream clients are probably looking for a marketing coach and they might not know who Leigh Fergus is, but if they’re searching for marketing coach, the chances of my profile showing up is much higher.
3. Use different sized hashtags
Hashtags are what make your Instagram posts and stories discoverable. They boost your visibility to people who aren’t already following you, hello future clients!
Instagram allows for 30 hashtags to be used on each post and I highly recommend taking advantage of all 30. It might sound like a lot, but the more you use, the more you get discovered. Using hashtags your dream clients are searching for or following will increase the chances of them finding you.
Don’t use oversaturated hashtags
Don’t use oversaturated hashtags (like #girlboss which has over 21.4 million to date). Your post is likely to appear for a split second but it’s almost immediately buried by all the other peeps using the same hashtag at the same time.
The hashtag sweet spot
My suggestion? Try a mix of hashtags between 5,000 – 500,000 and rotate your hashtags every time you post.
I use (and love) the Instagram scheduling tool Planoly. They have a hashtag manager which makes it super simple to rotate groups of hashtags and add them to a post with one click.
4. Write a magnetic message in your bio
When your dream clients actually find you make sure you have a mini magnetic message in your bio that explains who you help and how you help them.
If you’d like some help creating a magnetic message download my magnetic message guide.
Include a Call to Action
A super simple but game-changing addition to your Instagram bio is to include a call to action (CTA). It might sound silly, but for people to take action – to sign up to your free resource, to check out your latest offer, to enquire about your services – you need to tell them.
Use Action Verbs
Use action verbs such as join, download, visit, grab, and sign up, and if you’ve got the space, include emojis to help visually demonstrate.
Emoji’s Can Help Give Direction
I use the downward pointing finger emoji to help direct new followers to click my link. They can take my quiz to find out “what’s keeping your dream client’s from booking you”, join my Facebook group for trainings they won’t find anywhere else, or book a discovery call
5. Write captions that spark conversation
Instagram is all about pictures, right? Well, not exactly. An image will help stop the scroll but your caption will spark a conversation.
Engaging Captions Equal Connection
If you want to develop a deeper connection with your audience who personally DM you and trust you… Start writing engaging captions.
Here are 3 prompts I’ve used to help get you going!
- Tag a friend that needs to hear this. Insert some solid empowerment or motivation right here.
- Am I the only one that. Great conversation starter and opportunity for you to open up and relate to your customer
- Double tap if you’ve ever. Share something insightful or solve a problem that your target customer might be having.
When it comes to sparking a conversation, authenticity always wins. After all, customers connect with people they feel like they know personally!
6. Use Instagram stories
Instagram stories can help you communicate to your dream clients the value of who you are and what you do. They can show your dream clients why they should care about you and buy from you without being salesy, pushy or aggressive and instead feel really authentic and fun.
Encourage your dream clients to connect
Prompt your dream clients to reply to your stories, participate in your polls, share your stories with friends and screenshot for later. When you have people actively listening and responding to your stories you’ve created a self powered marketing machine.
7. Hang out in the DMs
In the direct messages is where you can understand a potential client’s struggles and ultimately show them how your offer can help them create the transformation they desire.
Follow up & Engage
My favourite way to start a DM conversation is by following up with people who have responded to my Instagram Stories, whether they’ve voted on a poll, submitted feedback or simply replied!
Hot tip: Use voice memos when DM’ing – it makes the process so much quicker and more fun! Plus, your new friend will appreciate you making the effort to provide such a personal response.
